Lake Erie and the Microplastics Problem: How Ohio Can Lead the Way

Microplastics in Lake Eerie

Lake Erie has one of the highest concentrations of microplastics in the world. A recent article from Cleveland.com highlighted a sobering reality: the lake could take more than 10 years to replace polluted water with clean water, and that estimate assumes the incoming water is clean, which is not currently the case.

At the same time, microplastics continue entering the lake every day. Synthetic clothing and textiles release tiny plastic fibers during laundry cycles, adding to the growing microplastic pollution problem in the Great Lakes. If we want to protect our lake, we have to stop pollution at the source.

Ohio Can Lead the Way

Ohio has an opportunity to take a leadership role in reducing microplastic pollution before it reaches our waterways. At CLEANR, we created a solution designed to capture microplastics before they leave your home and enter the environment. Preventing pollution at the source is one of the most effective ways to protect the future of Lake Erie and the Great Lakes.
